Vermont Jr. Team Tennis State Championships in Shelburne this weekend

The Champlain Valley Jr. tennis team will hold their State Championship tournament on Friday and Saturday, July 30-31 at the Davis Park tennis courts in Shelburne each day until 7 p.m.

In its first game of the double-elimination phase of the Little League All Star Tournament at Schifilletti Field Shelburne jumped to a quick 10-run lead in the top of the first enroute to an 18-4 victory in a rule-shortened game against Burlington. Stars at the plate were Shea Ireland (4-4, 4 RBI), Rayne Supple (3-4, 3 RBI), Andrew Pitcher (2-3, 2 doubles). William Hesslink and Henry Conroy each chipped in a homer while Will Ryan, Harrison Thayer, Hugh Sheahan, Alex Kent, Jack Caswell, and Thomas Stevens all hit safely. Pitchers Supple, Ireland, and Conroy combined for seven strikeouts.

Tanner Choiniere, Gary Mace, and Bruce Thibaud, all of Shelburne, won moose hunting permits at a lottery drawing in Waterbury on July 9. Michael O'Neill of Sheffield, Vt., who attended to witness the drawing, started the computer-generated selection process that randomly picked 765 winners among more than 12,000 people who applied.

Jamie Wilhite doesn't remember riding in a backpack strapped to her father, Jim, while he coached football, but she's sure it happened. Now, one generation later, Jamie has continued the family tradition, though the backpack has become a frontpack and the sport is soccer, not football, and the rider is a son, not a daughter.

Redhawks score with new football camp

The first-ever Redhawks football camp for third through ninth graders began Monday evening at 5:30 p.m. July 12 at Champlain Valley Union High School (CVU). The new non-contact football camp, run by long-time head football coach Jim Provost and Redhawks top running back and pass receiver JP Benoit, scored with the 59 campers in attendance.

The 11/12 Little League All Stars from Shelburne began pool play in the Vermont District One Tournament by defeating Richmond 9-0 at Rosenburg Field at Schifilitti Park in Burlington on Saturday, June 26. Shelburne scored four runs in the first inning as both Will Ryan and Shea Ireland singled and scored on a Drew Pitcher single.

Kwiniaska Golf Club, located along Spear Street, has a long history in Shelburne. The course was built by A. Bradford Caldwell in 1964, and has been owned by his daughter Bonnie Caldwell since 1992. Geoffrey Hesslink of Shelburne took first place in the United States Hunter Jumper Association National Hunter Classic on June 27 in Conyers, Ga. The 14-year-old, paired with the horse Cosmic Charley (owned by Casey O'Mara), bested a field of 27 competitors to take top honors at the Georgia International Horse Park, the site of the 1996 Olympic Equestrian Games.
