The Champlain Valley Jr. tennis team will hold their State Championship tournament on Friday and Saturday, July 30-31 at the Davis Park tennis courts in Shelburne each day until 7 p.m.

In its first game of the double-elimination phase of the Little League All Star Tournament at Schifilletti Field Shelburne jumped to a quick 10-run lead in the top of the first enroute to an 18-4 victory in a rule-shortened game against Burlington. Stars at the plate were Shea Ireland (4-4, 4 RBI), Rayne Supple (3-4, 3 RBI), Andrew Pitcher (2-3, 2 doubles). William Hesslink and Henry Conroy each chipped in a homer while Will Ryan, Harrison Thayer, Hugh Sheahan, Alex Kent, Jack Caswell, and Thomas Stevens all hit safely. Pitchers Supple, Ireland, and Conroy combined for seven strikeouts.

Jamie Wilhite doesn't remember riding in a backpack strapped to her father, Jim, while he coached football, but she's sure it happened. Now, one generation later, Jamie has continued the family tradition, though the backpack has become a frontpack and the sport is soccer, not football, and the rider is a son, not a daughter.

The first-ever Redhawks football camp for third through ninth graders began Monday evening at 5:30 p.m. July 12 at Champlain Valley Union High School (CVU). Kwiniaska Golf Club, located along Spear Street, has a long history in Shelburne. The course was built by A. Bradford Caldwell in 1964, and has been owned by his daughter Bonnie Caldwell since 1992. As the current on-site owner (she lives next to the fifth hole) Caldwell bears witness to all of Kwiniaska's seasonal ups, downs, and in betweens.

Barre's Nick Sweet claimed his second Thunder Road win of 2010 in the Carquest Governor's Cup 100 on Friday, June 25. Sweet took the lead from the pole and battled with Montpelier's Dave Pembroke throughout the 100-lap event.

Twenty-six Little League baseball players had a great time and learned a lot during CVU baseball camp last week according to head baseball coach and camp director Tim Albertson.

Geoffrey Hesslink of Shelburne took first place in the United States Hunter Jumper Association National Hunter Classic on June 27 in Conyers, Ga. The 14-year-old, paired with the horse Cosmic Charley (owned by Casey O'Mara), bested a field of 27 competitors to take top honors at the Georgia International Horse Park, the site of the 1996 Olympic Equestrian Games.

Meredith Powlison has scrambled nimbly across the decks of boats for more than a decade. As a Shelburne youngster, she began sailing with her dad, Dave, on Lake Champlain at age eight. She said, "Dad thinks it might have been a year or two earlier." However old she was, she developed a deep love for the open water, one that even dictated her choice of college: St. Mary's College of Maryland (SMCM).

For the past 15 years, Far Post Soccer Club (FPSC) has been competing in the Needham Memorial Day tournament. This year FPSC had three teams win the top division in their respective age groups.
