Following his 36-year career in the position of director of building and grounds at Shelburne Museum, longtime Shelburne resident Bob Furrer made a decision a few years ago. He was not ready to "retire." His decision was to join the Peace Corps.

When longtime Shelburne resident Doris Wehrle Maeck passed away at the age of 95 last month, she left behind a lifetime legacy of volunteerism and involvement with the Shelburne community.

News traveled fast when the Furthur concert slated for July 5 at Shelburne Museum was cancelled last week. The performance was to be part of the annual Ben and Jerry's Concerts on the Green series put on by Higher Ground.

In the past six years, I have read excerpts from the 2006 Shelburne Village Master Plan and would like to commend the Selectboard, the Planning Commission, the Shelburne Historic Preservation Commission, the Design Review Commission, and all consultants involved for the production of a comprehensive document that addresses a multitude of complex design, social, and financial challenges the village faces.

Selectboard and Planning Commission members spent four hours last Monday night, June 28 discussing and debating the Route 7 corridor (from the Laplatte River bridge north on Route 7) and the village. The concern for Route 7 is the 14 or 15 empty businesses on Shelburne Road.

Although Green Mountain Development Group (GMDG) has pulled out of the Shelburnewood project, all hope is not lost. Currently, the Champlain Housing Trust (CHT) has stepped forward and is in the preliminary stages of reviewing the Shelburnewood project. According to CEO of CHT Brenda Torpey, "We are looking into it and getting all of the information we can to see if we can move forward."

Shelburne Shipyard has been recognized by the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) as Vermont's First Clean Marina. This recognition is for the marina's ongoing efforts to protect and enhance the quality of Vermont's environment.

There must be as many recipes for pork BBQ as there are Harley motorcycles on the road. Last Sunday's "Pigs, Hogs & Pork BBQ Cook Off" at Green Mountain Harley-Davidson (GMHD) brought cops, barbeque chefs, motorcyclists, and supporters together to raise funds to benefit Camp Ta-Kum-Ta.

Vendors and shoppers alike seemed enthusiastic and satisfied with Saturday's turnout for the first Farmers Market of the summer season. The market will be open each Saturday morning on the village green from 9 a.m.- 2 p.m. through Oct. 9.

Things, or at least barbeque pits, will be heating up this Saturday when Shelburne's own Jamie Bissonnette of the Dutch Mill Restaurant competes for the title of "Best Darn BBQ." He will be up against pit bosses from Butler's Restaurant at The Essex Spa and Resort and Black Diamond Catering of Lake Elmore.

Shelburne Bay Senior Living opened its doors late in 1999, with 65 independent living apartments as a cutting-edge hospitality model senior living community. The goal of the facility was to offer residents a resort-like atmosphere and customer service as well as health services.

Shelburne resident Jim Edgerton is the fourth generation in his family featured in a famous Norman Rockwell illustration. The artwork to the far right features young Jim Edgerton as the youngest boyscout. The other three boyscouts are his father, completing the four generations of the Edgerton family posing for Rockwell illustrations and paintings. Rockwell lived next door to Jimmy's father, James "Buddy" Edgerton, and his family in West Arlington, Vt. for 10 years, (1943-1953).
