Draft horses come in all sizes and colors

The Green Mountain Draft Horse Field Day on Saturday, July 31 at Shelburne Farms attracted draft horses of all sizes and colors, draft horse owners and drivers of all ages and a crowd of spectators.

Jessie Donovan of Shelburne had a record-setting female overall win at the Lake Dunmore Triathlon Sunday, Aug. 8. Her first place finish, fifteenth place overall, broke the female overall course record in the .9 mile swim, 28-mile bike, and 6.2-mile run with a finish time of 2:19:49.
Rosie the pig is a mother

Rosie is a neighbor's pig and she is beautiful. I have known her since she arrived at their farm last summer. She is orange, black, and pink and a real cutie. In early June she moved from her pasture pen to a nice, cool, cozy, hay-filled, concrete-bottomed, in-barn pen.
Late blight reappears in Vermont

The fungus-like organism that wreaked havoc with tomatoes and potatoes last year is back again. Phytophthora infestans, the pathogen causing Late Blight of tomatoes and potatoes, was identified in the UVM Plant Diagnostic Clinic August 3, on tomato foliage from two different backyard gardens located in Lamoille County. It is assumed the disease originated from infected volunteer potatoes in the area.

Sixteen hundred racers will paddle for health and glory in this Sunday's fifth annual Lake Champlain Dragon Boat Festival in Burlington. Cheer on 72 Vermont community teams and four breast cancer survivor teams from the U.S. and Canada as they compete in 300-meter sprint races to benefit Dragonheart Vermont and Camp Ta-Kum-Ta, a camp for children with cancer.

In its first game of the double-elimination phase of the Little League All Star Tournament at Schifilletti Field Shelburne jumped to a quick 10-run lead in the top of the first enroute to an 18-4 victory in a rule-shortened game against Burlington. Stars at the plate were Shea Ireland (4-4, 4 RBI), Rayne Supple (3-4, 3 RBI), Andrew Pitcher (2-3, 2 doubles). William Hesslink and Henry Conroy each chipped in a homer while Will Ryan, Harrison Thayer, Hugh Sheahan, Alex Kent, Jack Caswell, and Thomas Stevens all hit safely. Pitchers Supple, Ireland, and Conroy combined for seven strikeouts.
